THINKING ACTIVITY ON HARD TIMES

About Charles dickens:

Charles John Huffam Dickens born onFebruary 1812 – 9 June 1870) was an English writer and social critic. He created some of the world's best-known fictional characters and is regarded by many as the greatest novelist of the Victorian era.

About hard times

Hard Times: For These Times (commonly known as Hard Times) is the tenth novel by Charles Dickens, first published in 1854. The book surveys English society and satirises the social and economic conditions of the era.

Hard Times is unusual in several ways. It is by far the shortest of Dickens's novels, barely a quarter of the length of those written immediately before and after it.[1] Also, unlike all but one of his other novels, Hard Times has neither a preface nor illustrations. Moreover, it is his only novel not to have scenes set in London.[1] Instead the story is set in the fictitious Victorian industrial Coketown, a generic Northern English mill-town, in some ways similar to Manchester, though smaller. Coketown may be partially based on 19th-century Preston.

ABOUT  THE MUSICAL PLAY HARD TIMES

This musical play was screening in our department the department of English, by our professor.

Screening of hard times

in the musical play hard times by Charles dickens begin with a narrator. He just put a remarkable introducation about  a play.the play start with an imaginary  town named

The hindi play is most faithful to the original novel.

The narrator take us to a scene of school, where all students like Louisa, Tom, bizarre, Cecilia  are learning togather at the same school. Mr. Chokumchild  is a teacher and school was owned by Mr. Gredgrind.

When the one scene was completed narrator comes on a stage and he immediately  join with another scene by narration technique. Narrator  criticized  the character of gradgrine.

Narrator also tells the audience about  the novel is written in  the parts

1 sowing

2. Reaping

3.garning

1.Sowing

After this  narration there is introducation of bounderby. Here the scene which shows that bouderby interested in Louisa but Louisa doesn't  interested in bounderby. By the play we can also see that the people of circus  often use the metaphorical  language  which is not understandable by bounderby.

The father of Cecilia  leaves her, because of her progress so gradgrine takes Cecilia  with him at his home.

Here  we can see different nature of Louisa and Cecilia , their thought  are quite different than one another.

Here we can see that the technique  of director that  one character play the role  in both scene as an example the scene of Cecilia  than the Cecilia  plays role in the both scene at the same time.

Here in the play life is compared with the story. In the play it look like city portrayed  as a character it describe  like wise as a character.

In the hindi play workers  describe  as hand . Meanwhile there is introducation of Stephen who is belonging from the working class. Here narrator satirized bounderby because of his behavior towards working class. After wards  introducation of Mrs. Peglar.

The second of the novel is starting the name of second part is  REAPING.

In this part the narrator  introduce a new character  Mr.  Hearthouse. In this part Louisa and hearthouse became  a friends. In this part audience can also see the symptoms nature of Louisa  towards workers. On the other hand ms. Starship, who is caretaker of bounderby house is keep eye on the activities of Louisa  and hearthouse.

In this part we can also see that family of gradgrine is not emotional it is family who believes in only logical things and this logic is becomes very costly when Tom is going to arrest by policeman, here one interesting scene of bizarre &gradgrind that bizarre ask that you only  teaches us logical things not emotional things in the answer gradgrine  doesn't  say anything. Because bizarre was right according  to his point of view.
